How To Open A Church Service

HOW TO OPEN A CHURCH SERVICE

The idea that a church is a gathering for people of all ages to participate in a formal service may be one thing that Christians worldwide can agree upon. A church service is a spiritual neighborhood linked by a shared communion and belief.

Remember that starting a church service can be a challenging and rewarding experience. Be prepared to learn and adapt as you go, and stay open to feedback from attendees as you work to create a meaningful and fulfilling worship experience.

In a Church setting, anyone can be appointed to lead in opening a church service. Here are some of our most outstanding suggestions to assist you if you were chosen to open a church service and are unsure how to start your church service.

How To Open A Church Service

1. Open A Church Service With A Call To Worship Or a Word Of Exhortation

When you mount the altar or podium or whatever place set aside for the church service conductor to use, the first step to opening a Church Service is a “Call To Worship or Word of Exhortation.” This is an invitation to worship and a request for the congregation to focus on God, dedicate their time, pay attention, and participate in every church service activity. Often it is meant to summons rather than long conversations unless one tries to set a specific tone.

You may wonder what this might be but don’t worry. I have suggested a few words of exhortation or call to worship for you to adapt in this session; feel free to use them.

Exhortation One

“Children of God, welcome to the incredible presence of God, where you will experience kindness, grace, faith, and tenacity. God is inviting everyone to participate in this unique service and to hear the good news that everyone is accepted precisely as they are. Just come as you are and go with the image of God.  Let us worship God in spirit and truth.”

Exhortation Two

“Brethren, let us submit ourselves in the presence of God and cast all our burdens on him. I welcome you to this Holy day. We are here to sing, pray, worship and praise God. I am glad that you are a partaker of today’s service. We are here today, as assembled in one place to worship our creator. Many of us are today for many reasons, and God is our point of attraction. Let us unload our souls, hear, and share our story of the beautiful love of God.”

Exhortation Three

Friends, let us worship God today because he is lovely and has given us shelter, faith, and life. Let us worship God today because he is good, loves, forgives, and encourages us. We are God’s people. Let us honor and praise him today. On this day, we come together to celebrate life- the life that God has given us, the life we share, and the abundant life that Jesus offers. Let us give thanks for the joy of life and praise God.

Exhortation Four

Friends, welcome to this time to honor the God we love and recall his precious promises. Welcome to our table of recollection and joy. Let us worship God with all our being, with our eyes to see, ears to hear, lips to sing, hands to clap, and a heart for gratitude. Let us worship God, our creator, redeemer, sanctifier, father, son, and Holy Ghost.

Exhortation Five

To take in the life that abounds all around us, to be grateful for the gifts we have been given, to see the beauty and promise of spring, to take in the season’s air thoroughly, accept love as a gift, and return it in kind is what it means to adore God. To be welcomed for who we are in the spotless presence of God is to understand very little of God’s vast love and kindness. So let’s praise God together.

Exhortation Six

Welcome to the temple of our God today. We are welcome with love and peace. Welcome to the celebration of our creator on this day. Let’s worship in hope and with grace. Welcome to our family today. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. Let’s worship together.

2. Open A Church Service With Prayers

After a call to worship, the next step is to offer an opening prayer. An excellent way to remind ourselves that God is with us, that he is at the center of all we do, and that the reason we are living is to love and adore him is to pray in the process of opening a church service.

Prayer of Summons

The first type of prayer is the Prayer of Summons. This is focused on reminding God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit to dwell in your midst as you are gathered. Remind God you expect to return to your various destinations with his blessings.  This is a typical example of an opening prayer of summons.

Holy Jesus, You are the one who started and finished our faith. You maintain and resurrect us. Whether we have a lot or little, help us worship and put our faith in you. May you be glorified, and may we be reminded of your promises by our worship. Lord, you are loved, sought for, and the only one we worship.

Father God, we acknowledge our need for you and humble ourselves before you. Our needs are laid at your feet. We would not exist without you. Show us the proper ways to worship you.

As we open our mouths, fill us with your holy spirit. Come and dwell with us and manifest your mighty powers. We expect healing from your word and upliftment from praises.

We know you pay attention to our petitions from your word, Lord. We are pleading with you, desiring to see your face, and humbling ourselves before you. As a church body, we gather to seek you. Thank you for hearing us.

We pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer of Leading

The third Opening prayer is the Prayer of Leading, which seeks the intercession of the Holy Spirit in everything that will be done in the service. It is a prayer of seeking the Lord’s leading without control of the flesh.

Dear Lord, we beg you to guide us today and give us clarity, direction, insight, and direction toward your truth in this service. Let your Holy Spirit direct our steps, actions, and words; let your words direct our decisions, and do not allow us to go before you.

We humbly seek your direction and wisdom today as we navigate this service. Oh Lord, give us the ability to make decisions by giving us the capacity to do so. Do not let certain factors or circumstances push us to act out of your way. Pardon our lack of spiritual awareness and urgency in fulfilling our duty to represent you.

Without your leadership, we can make poor decisions that could impact our confidence and the church in the future. We beg for wisdom to surround us and direct our thoughts so that every word we speak may exalt your Holy name. Keep us out of opposing ideas that might come. Fill us with Holy Spirit to be intelligent enough to teach the Scriptures’ words and interact with others.

We make this request in Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer of Forgiveness of Sins

The second opening prayer to start a church service is a prayer of forgiveness of sin. It is pertinent to render this prayer point for God to look beyond the congregation’s sins and use his grace and mercy to dwell in the service. The congregation requires this forgiveness to be set free from the wrongs of the past, present, and future so as not to be a barrier between God. Imploring the mercy of the Cross for atonement is imminent to obtain God’s promises in the Church Service.
Father, we thank you for your unconditional love and mercy. Given how undeserving we are of the suffering of Jesus on the cross. May you forgive all our sins and help us find the strength and knowledge to forgive those who wronged us.
Teach us to live an exemplary life of your unwavering love and limitless forgiveness. You are an all-Holy God who has pardoned our faults and allowed us to start over in your presence today. We appreciate your never-ending mercy and are incredibly appreciative to be a part of your unique service.
Pardon our tragic life that lurks secrets where wickedness can thrive in our souls. Use the precious blood of your son Jesus Christ to blot away our sins and provide a thoroughfare for us to gain your unreserved love. Awaken us spiritually as you wash our sins away.
This we pray in the Mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

Invoke the name of Jesus Christ in your prayer and say,

“Father, we thank you again today for a magnificent time in your presence. We pray that your splendor fills this house of worship today.”

In the name of Jesus, pray and beg the Lord to assemble His people for the service from every corner of the city or town.

We adore you, Dear Heavenly Father. You have created it today, so we can celebrate and be pleased with it. We appreciate all of your attention to us this week. Bless our Sunday service so we can fully hear and reflect on your word. Bless the one speaking your comment, and make him your instrument. To receive from you, prepare our hearts. We ask this through You, Lord. Amen.

Another way to pray;

We adore you, Dear Heavenly Father. You have created it today, so we can celebrate and be pleased with it. We appreciate all of your attention to us this week. Bless our Sunday service so we can fully hear and reflect on your word. Bless the one speaking your word, and make him your instrument. To receive from you, prepare our hearts. We ask this through You, Lord, in Jesus’ name, Amen.

3. Open A Church Service With Worship

The next step in opening a Church Service is worship. In Christianity, worship is paying God awe-inspiring respect and reverence. To worship is to submit to God or rulers. Praises, worship songs, and hymns have characterized the act of worship.

Someone chosen to open a church service must choose to implement one of the elements of worship.

Praises

These are choruses or short songs which are repeated after each verse. There are lots of Christain choruses one can listen to and practice ahead of his opening service session.

Worship Songs

Christian worship songs are handy for use during the opening service sessions.

Hymns

Hymns are songs sung by the congregation during Christian worship that often have nonbiblical stanzaic text.

4. Open A Church Service With Scripture

Intense passages from the Bible can be used to inspire people during the opening church service. Look for Bible Verses that can motivate your congregation to glorify God.

Search for verses that deal with the bigness, goodness, and love of God and utilize them to kick off your opening session with involvement from your congregation. You can choose Scriptures that support the songs you are about to sing.

Opening Service Scriptures are numerous, but few are highlighted in this post;

  • Divine invitation from Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come into him and eat with him, and he with me.”

  • Draw confidently closer to Hebrews 4:14–16Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

  • You should get some rest in Matthew 11:28–29 “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”

  • Give thanks to God in Psalm 9:1-2 “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”

  • Call to worship from Psalm 5 “But I, through the abundance of your steadfast love, will enter your house. I will bow down toward your holy temple in the fear of you. Lead me, O Lord, in your righteousness because of my enemies; make your way straight before me.”

  • Give thanks from Psalm 9:1-2 “I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”

  • Shout for joy in Psalm 66:1- 4 “Shout for joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of his name; give to him glorious praise! Say to God, “How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies come cringing to you. All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your name.”

  • Reverence the presence of God in Acts 2:1–2 “They were all gathered in one location on Pentecost. They were sitting in the middle of the home when a sound like a ferocious wind was blowing from heaven suddenly filled the space.

Preparing To Start A Church?

How can one start a church without any prior experience in starting a church? The Church and confession you choose will determine the best measures to take to become a pastor. Starting a church service can vary depending on the denomination, traditions, and specific practices.

Before beginning a career as a preacher, consider whether you genuinely want to do it and are comfortable sharing your beliefs with others. Make sure you have made the right choice and are prepared to devote yourself to the cause since becoming a preacher takes time and strength.

It would be best to consider whether you have a burning desire to become a preacher and a deep compassion for everyone. However, here are some general steps that you may consider:

Church Naming

Matthew 16:18

“And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

A new church pastor may find it most challenging to agree with this point. A crucial first step is giving your new Church a name. Consider how your Church’s name might tie its mission together.

You can name your Church using the following three combinations: location + doctrine, tree + water, or theology + point.

An example can be: Chicago church called the Redeemer, Grace Church in Fishers, Hyde Park Presbyterian Church in Lancaster, or Lutheran Church of Oak Stream Aspen Creek Episcopal.

You can give your new Church any name you like, in all seriousness. Keep away from fashions and trends.

Avoid using names that are already in use by nearby churches or a name that has already been registered with the Government. A church’s name would elevate its stature and inspire more trust in your fellowship.

Choose a name for your Church that is unique, profound, and free of double issues.

Choose a Location

You will need to go to a Church where the service will occur. This could be a dedicated church building, a rented space, or an outdoor location.

Prepare the space

Prepare the space where the service will take place. This includes setting up chairs or pews, arranging the altar or podium, and ensuring equipment is correctly set up and functioning.

Recruit Participants

Depending on the size of your congregation, you may need to recruit participants for the service. This could include musicians, readers, and other volunteers who can help with logistics. Arrange personnel according to the team positions they have been given, such as an usher on the hospitality team.

Calendar Preferences: Schedule individuals following their stated preferences, obstruct dates, avoid conflicts, and turn down requests. You must set a date and time for the service. Consider the preferences and schedules of your intended audience.

Develop a program

Develop a program for the service, including the order of worship, prayers, hymns, and any other elements customary for your denomination or tradition. You can look to other churches for inspiration or consult a religious leader if unsure what to include. Plans for each service should be explicitly made, with information on attendees, songs, and notes.

Service Types: Arrange plans by services, such as contemporary, or by ministry categories, such as children’s ministry.

Timing: Set the duration and order of each service item so that everyone on your team knows what to expect.

Conduct the service

Finally, conduct the service according to the program that you have developed. Be sure to lead with intention, energy, and a spirit of reverence and inclusiveness.
